Apple, which had come under fire for making the Safari browser a compulsory download for PCs, has rolled back this move. Their latest version of the Software Update tool for Windows now lists software that can be downloaded via the service, and groups updates into "fresh installations" and "refresh existing installation". The new version of Software Update also lets you turn off the service.
This move has come only after a lot of flak though. In a recent statement, John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla, had said, "Apple has made it incredibly easy – the default, even – for users to install ride-along software that they didn't ask for, and maybe didn't want. This is wrong, and borders on malware distribution practices."
