Bubble, Bubble, Google Trouble
By: Sharon Khare   |   Mar 29, 2006
When the official Google blog gave eagle-eyed blogger Trey Philips a 404 error that suggested the site was no longer registered, what did the good netizen do? Well, he held fort. He checked if he could register 'google blog' and surprise! surprise! he could.

For the short while (we heard 36 minutes) that Philips owned the blog address this is what showed up on the site:

Google, fix your blog pleeasssee! <3

(P.S. Just to clear things up, I'm not associated with Google at all. I just wanted to take advantage of this before someone else with less worthy intentions did. The username was giving a 404, so I tried registering a new blog with it. Surprisingly, it worked. Oh, and no posting URLs in the comments or else they'll be deleted.)

Google had accidently deleted its own blog, which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. They confirmed on their (now up and running) blog that it was not a hack, there was no systemwide vulnerability and nobody had guessed their password.

"We've determined the cause of tonight's outage. The blog was mistakenly deleted by us (d'oh!) which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. This was not a hack, and nobody guessed our password. Our bad."

Click on the image below to see what the Google blog page looked like after Philips claimed the address.
