IBM Begins Empowering Schools in India
By: IANS   |   Nov 03, 2006
IT major IBM Thursday launched 'Re-inventing Education', a program to support education in India's corporation schools.

The program was launched simultaneously in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with 30 corporation schools participating in the first phase. It will reach out to 7,000 students of class six to ten and educate them on hardware, software, teaching tools and curriculum uplift services.

"The objective of the program is to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the middle and secondary schools across India," said IBM Foundation president Stanley Litow.

"The 30 schools in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will be part of IBM's pilot initiative, which we expect to be adopted across the country soon."

'Re-Inventing Education' is a universal programme developed by IBM 10 years ago. It is locally sensitive and can be language specific, though the technology and information platform are the same worldwide.

China adopted it two years ago and today the IBM programme has enabled 100,000 Chinese teachers, Litow said.

Shankar Annaswamy, IBM India managing director, said IBM's community initiative in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will contribute to mathematics and science learning in schools and help reduce the digital divide.
