Maxthon, a small Beijing based web browser has maxed out bigwigs like Google, Yahoo! and MSN in China, by attracting millions of Chinese users. The browser manages to work its way around the government's censorship by funneling traffic through a web proxy, giving Chinese users a free web to surf. Maxthon is built on top of the IE engine, which, according to executives, adds value to the browser through features like tabbed browsing, highly customizable settings and baked-in RSS detection.
Although Maxthon does not promote its web proxy feature openly for obvious reasons, Chinese web users have been spreading it as a shortcut. The popularity of the browser is rapidly spreading to Europe, mid east and US, patronized by over 60 million internet users.
Maxthon 2.0, which is due to launch soon, will include parallel browsing, but will continue to operate over the IE engine. However, the biggest draw for Chinese and mid-eastern countries remains the ability to search the web without censors.

Two weeks ago I gave an interview to Cnet's Stefanie Olsen at the Global Internet Summit about Maxthon. A few days ago her article was published, with a very different pitch that I expected. The article took off like crazy
