Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers today, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.
Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.
Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.
A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.
Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.

i wonder what windows 7 needs in order to have a minimum of 1 gb ram. you know its unlike linux where the minimum specs mean a raw deal. with 1 gb ram and a decent 5-6 series gfx card from nvidia, you can have a rocking ubuntu system with really cool gfx - much more than vista offers.
vista sucks up ram, gfx power for some ordinary effects. you probably need to tweak linux a bit - which isnt what an ordinary user looking for - but the code is so light. i dont know why microsoft cant come up with better stuff with a huge army of coders, they can afford the best of the best, and pay them by the bushels, yet they come up with stuff like vista. yecch!

Here is a small bit of news a few would have heard :
1) Windows 7 will have an active software for TOUCH and SPEECH. U will need to use the keyboard rarely.
2) It will NOT have large scale incompatibility problems like VISTA.
It will run most of the previous softwares that are compatible in XP and VISTA.
3) Minimum requirement will be 1GB RAM.
So, plz wait with patience.

There used to be a time in Windows 98 when people were same as against XP when it released as people are saying now against Vista... by the end of Windows 7 release every one would be praising Vista and saying bad about Windows 7. Is it human nature or just tiem to adopt the better thing as the resorces get available?
Sorry to answer back genie,u were partly right. But XP became popular within 4-5months of its release in India. The major problem VISTA faced was incompatibility with softwares and hardwares like printers, etc. But XP did not face this problem to a large scale as VISTA did.

The "software not compatible" problem, are not from Microsoft, but from lazy software companies who didn't care about the launch of Vista. They didn't created the software keeping Vista in mind. Vista is more secure than XP. It save efforts required to format computer which was hijacked due to virus and trojans and spywares. You can run a VISTA computer comfortable above 512 MB ram.
With Vista you will not face browser pointing to unknown search engines, alerts from your computer saying you need to get a xyz spyware to make ur computer secure which makes your computer slow.
If you have anything near dual core and 1 GB ram, then you should upgrade to VISTA. Rest use XP

Microsoft is just force us to use VISTA. However i think VISTA is very SLOW OS as ever. We need to upgrade our Hardware to install but slow performance is sure even after change the better hardware.
