Mind reading computers that can interpret facial expressions of users via a video camera are set to be unveiled at a science exhibition in London today. The "emotionally aware" computer, developed by British and American scientists in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts is pre- programmed to recognize different expressions generated by actors, for reference.
Professor Peter Robinson, a co developer said, "Imagine a computer that could pick the right emotional moment to try to sell you something, a future where mobile phones, cars and Web sites could read our mind and react to our moods. Our research could enable Web sites to tailor advertising or products to your mood." The developers plan to get more data to determine whether someone is bored, interested, confused, agrees or disagrees.
On the face of it, the technology that analyzes your expressions, reads your mind and reacts to it seems awe inspiring, but personally, I think it's a little creepy, if anything. Imagine your computer simultaneously taking images of your expressions, encoding and analyzing your emotional state, and then sending it to some website which will try and sell you stuff according to whatever mood you're in!
The developers insist it's a good thing as one can use the software for online teaching, for better communication, or even learning how to drive! Online classes and driving lessons apart, the last thing I'd want is someone selling me funny movie DVDs online when I'm pissed!
