ODF Gets Approval From ISO Body
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   May 04, 2006
In a major step forward towards having true interoperable standards, The International Organization for Standards (ISO) gave formal approval to the Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF), setting the path for office suites based on ODF to be more broadly adopted.

The move comes at a crucial time as Microsoft's rival standard for its own Office productivity suite, OpenXML, is awaiting approval by the ISO body. The ODF is a standard for office documents overseen by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) and supported by Microsoft rivals IBM and Sun, among other companies. They are pushing for ODF to be adopted internationally as the standard for office documents and software that creates and manages these documents, such as Microsoft's popular Office suite and rivals such as Sun's Star Office.
