Orb Networks is making it easy for those with gaming consoles to get TV access to all of the digital entertainment on the home PC, using the console as the bridge. The company touting the service as a substitute to Apple TV saying, "The 17 million households with gaming consoles have no need to purchase Apple TV".
"Because it's Apple, Apple TV will get a lot of buzz. But, let's look at the scorecard. Just one day after Apple announces Apple TV and Orb announces digital media support for all game consoles, Apple boasts zero users vs. Orb with 17 million users who can enjoy their media on TV. By the end of year—even in a wildly successful scenario—Apple will have 1 million vs. Orb's 25 million users who can enjoy their media on TV," said Joe Costello, chairman and CEO of Orb Networks. "And, this small community of Apple TV users will be paying $299 for a special purpose proprietary piece of hardware, while the rest of us get more media freedom for free. Bottom line, Orb is Apple TV for the rest of us."
Orb works simply. Users have to first Download load Orb at www.orb.com (Version v2.00.0856 or higher) onto their Windows PC at home. Wii and PS3 owners then need to turn on the TV that is connected to their game console and open the Web browser. Using the game console remote control or controller, they can then log onto their Orb account mycast.orb.com. XBox 360 owners are required to go to the media tab and select the media type (video, photos, or music) they want to play on their TV. They then have to click "computer" from the list of options, and will see a list of the computers running Orb on their LAN. They have to then select one and then pick from the available video, photos, or music.
Orb MyCasting lets users enjoy all of the digital entertainment stored on the home PC for viewing on any device with a streaming media player and Internet connection—such as other PCs, laptops, PDAs, mobile phones with streaming players, and now game consoles including Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3.
Orb lets users build and organize their own "channels" for music, photos, video, TV, and documents stored on their home computer, as well as online videos from the growing source of Internet TV and content sites.
