Shiv Sena Making Software to Monitor Orkut
By: Reuters   |   Jun 09, 2007
The student wing of the Shiv Sena has asked public Internet centres in India to partly block access to Orkut, and is making a software to monitor abusive communities on the popular social networking site operated by Google.

The Shiv Sena said many Indians use Orkut to bad-mouth religious groups and disturb communal harmony, and also spread misinformation about India.

The group is part of a growing band of cultural vigilantes opposed to what they see as increasing mimicry of the West. It often stops St. Valentine's Day celebrations, attacks clubs and pubs and prevents screening of sexually bold films.

"Orkut is used by many destructive elements to spread canards about India, Hindus, our gods and cultural heritage," said Abhijit Phanse, president of Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, the student group.

"We are gently telling Internet cafe owners that it is their responsibility to see that surfers do not use their facility to carry out such hate campaigns," he said.

"Or else, we will have to do that job for them."

Last week, dozens of Shiv Sena workers vandalised some Internet centres, saying they were not stopping their customers from accessing Orkut groups involved in sending hate messages.

"We are not saying all of Orkut should be shut. We are just saying stop access to those groups that indulge in hate campaigns," Phanse said.

Internet cafe owners said they had received a letter from the group saying that if they did not spot and stop people surfing Orkut to spread hate messages, their businesses would be attacked.

"The letter was pasted on our wall. But what can we do? It is up to the Internet service providers to block a site," said a cyber cafe owner who was too scared to be named.

Phanse said his group was developing a special software that Internet service providers could install to block any message containing certain words and phrases such as "I hate" or "I despise".

"The software should be ready in 2-3 months," Phanse said, adding that they were hoping to involve Orkut authorities in the discussions.

Supression would only create explosion. It's WRONG to love in India, but it's RIGHT to hate in India.
God help India.

Shiv Sena is being stupid. Don't they have anything better to do? Tell them to go and destroy Ajanta and Ellora. India is the land of Kamasutra. Are they forgetting their history
Anonymouse @ Aug 21, 2007
they should not stop students 2 stop surfing on orkut since many ppl use it 4 innocent reasons. Instead they should ban those communities which affects the cultural heritage.

This is stupidity!

Is it called democracy... Its free to discuss any issue on internet, or with others. It holds as good as Microsoft Bans its OS users to diuscuss about Google or Mac...
Any person operating a group in another country may have positive or negative feelings towards a religion or a community or a country, its we people to decide to discuss these issues, or change the mind set to challenge them

Time to kick Shiv Sena out of power - these people know how to abuse power. India's hard fought democratic ideals are being threatened by these narrow minded elements. They are the ones that need to be 'blocked' - not the free open discussions on Orkut or any of the thousands of other sites stating the truth about these morons.
They want to censor the words ' I Hate' - well I HATE SHIV SENA. I HATE BAL THACKERAY AND ALL HIS MORONIC FOLLOWERS. GO CENSOR THIS!

Shiv sena cadres consist of ignorant and unemployed youth used as slaves by the corrupt bigwig in the party.

This saffron group is trying to take away the freedom of expression which is granted by our constitution.

We should squash these deviant beings quick and get rid of their thugs by marking the Shiv Sena a Militant Extremist Outfit like the LTTE.

This piece of news is both disturbing and funny. What they are doing defies logic.. I mean there's hundreds of such hate websites and communities, why single out Orkut. By the way , who died and made Shiv Sena the gaurdians of Indian Culture? I know this is a tech forum, but I cant help but comment on this.

BT & SS can publicly express their hatred for anyone in India. But no one should express hatred towards them !
Denis @ Jun 10, 2007
Stupid morons won't realise they will have to write their magic 'software' on the server side to do all their monitoring. I wonder if google will give these hooligans privelages at that high level
Drain_bamaged @ Jun 09, 2007
