Sony UMD Format Faces Crisis
By: Sharon Khare   |   Mar 31, 2006
Movie studios and retailers are abandoning Sony's Universal Media Disk (UMD) for movies, because of its lack luster sales.

The UMD is a tiny optical storage device developed by Sony for its PSP portable gaming computers. The disks are basically designed to store games, but consumers can also purchase UMD movie titles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, at Wal-Mart, the US' largest retailer, several shelves of movies in the PSP section were gone. All that was left were seven UMD titles on the top of the PSP section, with no prices or other information. Universal Studios Home Entertainment has completely stopped producing UMD movies and one high-ranking exec said, "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb - like Blu-ray."

The UMD-based movies cost about $20 a title (similar to DVD movies), but can only be played on a PSP, which is one of the main reasons being cited for its failure. Some maintain that Sony released too many titles too fast and still others say that Apple's video iPod hogged the limelight.
