Symantec sues Microsoft over Volume Management Technology
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   May 19, 2006
Leading security software firm, Symantec has sued Microsoft on grounds of “deliberately and surreptitiously” misappropriating its technology for part of the upcoming Windows Vista operating system. Symantec says, Microsoft has breached the 1996 contract with Veritas, which was bought by Symantec last year, on a storage technology called ‘volume management'. The technology handles storage capacity for large amounts of data in the operating system, which is patented by Symantec.

Microsoft and Veritas had entered into a contract to license volume management technology. A statement from Microsoft says that the contract gave it the right to buy out Veritas' code and intellectual property rights. Microsoft claims it did buy the intellectual property in 2004, however, Symantec has now filed a lawsuit claiming that Microsoft does not have any such right over its intellectual property and so cannot use the Volume Manager in Windows Vista.

The outcome of the lawsuit may delay the launch of Microsoft's Window Vista, which is due early next year.
