The Indian GSM-based cellular industry added 50 lakh subscribers in May, while the subscriber base touched 13.06 crore. Bharti Airtel retained its top slot with a market share of 31.20%.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has stated that compared to the subscriber base of 125.57 million recorded in April 2007, the Indian GSM industry has increased by 4.02 per cent. Bharti Airtel has 4.07 crore subscribers while Hutch-Essar had 2.92 crore and a market share of 22.36 per cent. BSNL had 2.79 crore users, with a market share of 21.43 per cent.
Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) director general, T V Ramachandran said the growth of the GSM subscribers is driven primarily by aggressive network expansions by the operators, coupled with decreasing tariffs and increasing affordability.
