Airtel to Bring iPhone 3G to India
By: Tech2.com News Staff   |   Jun 10, 2008
Bharti Airtel and Apple have confirmed that they will be bringing the highly anticipated iPhone 3G to India later this year.

Released yesterday, iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

"We are delighted with the opportunity to bring the innovative iPhone 3G to India," said Manoj Kohli, president and CEO, Bharti Airtel. "As India's leading telecom operator, Bharti Airtel has always stood for innovation and customer delight. With our reach across the country and iPhone’s revolutionary features, we have a valuable proposition for our customers in India."

"We are thrilled to be working with Bharti Airtel, India’s leading integrated telecom company, to bring iPhone 3G to millions of mobile customers in India," said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "We can't wait to get this revolutionary product in the hands of even more people around the world."

Airtel customers will be able to purchase iPhone 3G at Airtel Relationship Centers. Details of pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.

IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF LAUNCHIN APPLE 3G ON VODAFONE SERVICES
JAPNEET SINGH @ Jul 17, 2008
Can I buy the iphone 3G in US and use it in India. What are the technical issues of using it in India. Can it be unlocked.
Raj @ Jul 10, 2008
There's no chance that iphone will be around 8 or 12 k here . According to the negotiations apple gets somewhere between 400 to 500 $ from AT&T for the 199$ iphone. AT&T then passes on this burden to its customers through higher tariff rates which have been announced. Since subsidising means higher tariff rates no operator in India is going to subsidise it. That means the consumer will have the pay upfront the actual cost of iphone + tax which could be anywhere in the range from 18K to 24K . But I dont think that is going to stop some gizmo freaks from buying one.
Jubin @ Jul 09, 2008

i think its cost will be around 8K-10K but the thing which matters will be the monthly plan as may be not all of the customers will be interested in internet access or any other enterprise features.
so it will be better to have a simple and flexible plan for those customers.
i pray it will be for everyone....
Manpreet Singh @ Jun 23, 2008
After going through all the comments below,i do not totally deny them but partially Air Tel should concentrate on their administration besides their sales. As they are in the top most position in the Net Work
and costumer ship , but lack service as the staff are not enough to fulfill the duties. Apart from that the billing system is always criticized.
at the same time the organization also may be under the risk of bad debts but it doesn't make sense in creating problems for costumers
graded best
vamsi krishna @ Jun 18, 2008
who is gonna use......3g in india.......its not gonna be 15k in india........it will be around......10k
....if its 10k......nokia....will hav a tough competition.....
n all the mobile rates will slash there rates like anything
sharath @ Jun 17, 2008
How much is it?Accordibg to the price given I think it will be 8,000
VInay @ Jun 17, 2008
Good its coming to India, Bad its coming on Airtel which is the biggest fraud company in India or the world, dont believe?check the billing and the criminal ways they cheat the public. The latest is the concept of E-Recharge even for post paid customers, you pay the bill well before the last date for payment and the representative pretends to send an SMS to your mobile confirming payment. you receive the confirmation a day after the last date and therefore in the next bill you will be charged late fee of Rs. 50/month. I refused to pay this late fee amount for three months and it multiplied three times. I had to finally barge into the Airtel center and blast the manager when he noticed the people surrounding him, he immediately cancelled the extra charge. Please check bills before paying
Sonel @ Jun 17, 2008
im waiting to see how ridiculous will airtel get and how much will it price it - im sure it will be 25 to 30 k!!! and in the usa it would be somewhere in the range of 8k!!!!

ok give and take some it should be sold at 16k max, anything more than that would be ridiculous, iphones are made in china anyways.
ashok pai @ Jun 16, 2008
In India these jokers will be selling a 'Indianized' (meaning, substandard quality as in the case of most of the US products) version of iPhone. I have clearly seen the difference in Blackberry devices which they sell in US and in India. Looks like they sell some cheaper versions here but with premium price tag attached.

Jokers here would be buying it paying more and thinking as though they have bough some expensive stuff!!!! India is a laughing stock without doubt.
Amar @ Jun 15, 2008
the two main areas of india i.e. J&K AND NORTH EAST, even donot have GPRS with private service providers, what will be the scope of 3G there.
PK MEHRA @ Jun 15, 2008
iPhones under contract would be sold for 200 and 300$. Those without would go anywhere upto 700-800$. That comes up to 30k+ in India. :-(
Prashant @ Jun 13, 2008
i want to buy i phone i have airtel conection above five years old.so when i phone luanch in india and how much price of iphone in india.and what i do for purchase iphone.................
pritesh mehta @ Jun 12, 2008
These Guys (any service providers) not even providing the PUSH-TO-TALK facilities which we are already having now in our phones. What are they going to do with 3G mobiles.???????????

a BIG QUESTION MARK

. Instead 3 G they can steps for providing PUSH-TO-TALK faciltied
Rouse @ Jun 12, 2008
exellent news but the price will play a major role in their success
KAMLESH PANCHAL @ Jun 10, 2008
Clearly you lads don't seem to get the point. The iPhone is $199 in US, there's no garantuee it'd be of same price here.
In US, the mobile phone market is completely different from ours. They have data plans. The cheapest you can find one there is Sprint's $15 (that's ~600K) a month plan. And AT&T is offering iPhone ownership with a $30/month (1.2K/month) data plan that'd last two years as per the contract meaning that there're hidden costs.

The Indian market being a bit different I'm expecting a competitive price range of atleast 15K. It will be more, and that's capitalism for you.

Don't dream of it being launched at just 10K :p If you do, you're an idiot.
ignoramous @ Jun 10, 2008
There is a lot to iPhone than 3G

So who cares if 3G runs or not!!!

WHERE CAN I GET A BETTER PHONE for less than 10K??? I say its gonna create a selling record
Abhishek @ Jun 10, 2008
how does airtel is going to support 3g apple phones in india, when they dont have a network base for the same?
amit @ Jun 10, 2008
when and how much and how do I advance pay for it? have not bought the iphone as waiting for a launch in India
sunil @ Jun 10, 2008
I have a clear point to make -

"Airtel and Vodafone (both contenders in bringing the iphone to india, do not themselves have 3G networks available. But on the other hand, MTNL, has even installed the 3G networks, tested thier towers for a 3G test, and it has even succeeded. The approval of the Indian Governement is the last thing required. Then why does'nt MTNL consider bringing the Iphone??"

And also what will airtel (or even Vodafone) iphone customers do with their fancy "3G" iphone technology, with no 3G towers installed???

An even if Airtel or Vodafone want to establish their 3G networks in india, then iphone 3G would probably take another year to come to India.
Simarpreet Singh @ Jun 10, 2008
I'm dying to buy this wonderful gadget.
it will cost around 8k - 10k. I'm wondering why they are delaying the launch in india. I thing it's gonna make a new selling record.
amit @ Jun 10, 2008
bloody nokia shud learn something from apple wit the competitive pricing done by them...a n95 8gb costs 28000 where as an iphone 8gb costs 8000 buks...there is gona be a huge price drop in the prices of the mobile phones when iphone comes into india ..if this does not happen the apple will get a major share of the mobile phone market in india
prashant @ Jun 10, 2008
so what about Vodafone? wasn't it supposed to be coming to India with the iPhone too?
Dimple @ Jun 10, 2008
AFAIK Airtel does not have a 3g network in India so how are they going to support the Iphone 3g's "revolutionary features" ? And Apple's new strategy is to sell the phones unlocked so that it can be used in any network so whats the deal with "Airtel brings the new Iphone" ?
AK @ Jun 10, 2008
said Tim Cook, Apple's COO. "We can't wait to get this revolutionary product in the hands of even more people around the world."
and make even more money on this overhyped product .. :-)
