Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of 'Airtel Messenger', to offer its customers, the ability to chat via text messages, within a personalized set of communities.
This service aims to give all Airtel mobile customers, the advantage of having the same experience as a desktop chat service. Airtel Messenger users can send and receive messages in real-time via their mobile device, without the need to be attached to a computer. The service offers various personalized options including status tag options like 'Online/Offline', 'I am busy' or 'In a meeting'. It also gives users the advantage to convey multiple emoticons while in conversation. Its Presence-Enabled address book allows the sender to know when their contacts are online.
Sanjay Gupta, Chief Marketing Officer, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel, "Traditionally in India, the mobile phone has predominantly been a voice-driven medium to communicate amongst one and another. Airtel Messenger is a convenient & value added text-messaging service that will largely appeal to young professionals and youth to be in constant touch with their friends, family and business associates. It is an innovative service that combines the power of a desktop chat with the mobility and convenience of an Airtel mobile."
To download this service, Airtel customers are required to have GPRS and Airtel Live activated handsets. Users may register by sending an SMS to 57070 with the message 'IM'. Once the user has been registered they can create their own messaging communities by adding friends from their phone book or by manually adding new contacts. The service also enables the user to make multiple textual conversations simultaneously. As an introductory launch offer, this service if free of cost till 31st August 2007.
