State owned telecom operator and Internet Service Provider (ISP), BSNL has announced that it will provide broadband speed of up to 2 Megabits Per Second (Mbps), to all its existing subscribers. BSNL broadband subscribers, who have been offered internet connectivity of 256 kilobits Per Second until now, will be liable for the speed upgrade in early 2007.
Announcing the move, the Communication and IT Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, said that the year 2007 will be christened as the 'Year of Broadband' in India.
He said BSNL has offered this aggressive plan of providing five million broadband connections in 2007, with minimum download speed of 1 Mbps, as a challenge for private operators.

Everybody cannot afford costly packages. A business man/woman can go for costly broadboand packages any time as per per his/her need.
It is my humble request to consider this as a need for curious students accessing websites.
With warm regards

Do they have the necessary infra stratructure in place for this in a place like Kerala to offer this speed.
I am still skeptical
Thomas @ Dec 24, 2006
Not very useful to me... unless BSNL also revises the bandwidth upwards..
P.S. BSNL, you want to see the spread of broadband, then give us some bandwidth... Please...0.4gigs is toooooo low

if iam not hard of hearing i heard they said "at no extra cost to the existing subscriber" and it was well quoted that currently people have to pay rs.3000 for such a speed on bsnl broadband.
so hang on guys, Broardband Year 2007 will gve you a lot, but of coure you would need a lot of money to pay for bandwidth if you still hangon to Rs.500 plan.
see ya,

This new scheme is simply superb.MTNL are you listening?
Bharat @ Dec 16, 2006
To achieve the target bsnl will have to provide following
1. unlimited access ( no limit as in rs 900 home plan )
2. universal homeplan at 500 rs per month.
if there is a limit of 1 gb , how many hours one will be able to use.
most people in india d'ont know the limit, they feel net is free they will use it for hours , there bill going into thousands and lacs.
if rental is higher than 500rs ,most people will be unable to afford.
my son is in usa getting more than 2mb speed ,unlimited access at rs
600 approx in INR.
earlier you follow the suggetion better it is , if your wnt to achieve the target, as more than rs.500 per month will take you far away from target,as other broadbend services are avialable
