BSNL Offers STD Calls at Local Rates
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Oct 12, 2006

State owned Telecom provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is set to announce a 40% cut in STD rates, today. The 60 million customers of BSNL, in the country will now be able to make calls calls for 1 Rupee a minute, regardless of the distance. Also, the number of free calls will go up from 25 a month to 50 a month.

The new rates are likely to come into effect by Diwali this year.

Moreover, BSNL's tariff cut is accompanied by a massive reduction in rental for its OneIndia scheme. The rental for this plan is due to be reduced from Rs 225 to Rs 180 a month. According to the new plan, users will need to pay 1 Rupee per minute for inter-circle STD calls, as opposed to Rs 2.40 per minute. However, local calls (up to 50 kms) will become more expensive, going up from Rs 1.20 for three minutes to Re 1 a minute.

At present, BSNL provides services in 23 telecom circles across the country, except in Delhi and Mumbai and charges 2.40 per minute for STD calls. For Delhi and Mumbai-based customers, state-owned MTNL had already announced last month, that all calls will be charged as per local calling charges.

Charging re. 1 per minute for local calls within a radius of 50 kms. And slashing the std. Rates from rs. 2.40 to re. 1 per minute is fooling the public and is a gimmic. After all how many of us are going to benefit from these rates_ only a few. Most of us are interested in
local calls only an not std. It is only the bsnl that will see it's coffers fill up and we all seeing our monthly bills soaring up.

This competetive prices by BSNL will keep other ISPs also on their toes. One drawback that I've experienced is that BSNL doesnt have much coverage as Airtel or Hutch. Ofter will get disconnected from the network

charging rupees three per each local call or to a phone within 50 kms range is highly unjust and needs to be re-examined, since the large number of bsnl customers are are poor citizens and cannot afford such steep increase for local calls upto 50 kms distance
