Fire Downs Airtel Network in Mumbai
By: Tech2.com News Staff   |   Jul 18, 2008
A fire broke out at commercial complex Peninsula Park, home to a lot of big offices including Vodafone and Airtel.

The fire caused by a short circuit in the power cables that belong to the power supplier in Peninsula Chambers, one of the buildings in the complex, reportedly raged for about four hours before it could be controlled badly affecting the Airtel office leading to a lot of subscribers being unable to make or receive phone calls - getting an "Emergency Calls Only" message on their screens instead.

The fire affected network in South Mumbai and some parts of the suburbs according to Airtel.

I am using Airtel Pune number in Mumbai, As Its Local for all Maharashtra,Its been fine running in Mumbai for the last 1 year, but from 18th July till now 21st July,Its not working, Only calls getting received, No Outgoing Calls, and on top of it, from today, for receiving calls i am being charged as like i am in Roaming, Its Enough of it, I have been a regular customer of Airtel since 2003, I doubt with this kind of Disaster Backup Facilities, How long can Airtel Sustain in the market, Just think, if in these 1 week time from 18th July to 25th July if anyone is going for a new connection in Mumbai, who will take Airtel Services in Mumbai ??
I guess the answer to this will open the eyes of Airtel..

It is easy to point fingers when someone's at fault. how many people here actually use fire precautionary measures? maybe a fraction.
I am not defending airtel but there are mishaps to which nothing can be done. This was a smaller one.
Tsunami - chennai, Was electricity available during Tsunami?

A year or two back, Airtel, has similar failure of its system, when its chennai office was gutted - similarly - due to a short circuit in their Chennai Santhome office. That night, I was so confused - with my hand set, which was DEAD. The next morning, desparately, i was TAXING my mobile for its 'presumptive failure'!?. Later losing my 'nuts', i called up Chennai Police (100) - whose taker - jovially alerted me to check with chennai's (South India's) Leading Tamil Daily - "Thinathanthi", which had covered this piece of fire, in its city edition. The services resumed later, i think. But Airtle, did not had the COURTESY, to even acknowledge a disruption in their services, which was beyond their hands. They least bother for the customer's privileges. They owe a regret to the customers.

I work at Peninsula Corporate Park and I witnessed huge flames of fire coming from the basement of Peninsula Chambers where the office of Airtel is situated. I work in the other building. We didn't had any electricity for around 3 hours. Most of my colleagues carrying Airtel connection was badly affected as their lines were not working during entire afternoon

i was affected in greater bombay too from afternoon and i got SMS from Airtel about this in late evening. :(

You will find the Pune updates on my blog(adityasphones.wordpress.com), plus what Airtel people had to say. These guys are slowly getting unprofessional in their dealings. Also I feel that Airtel is where Reliance was when it had just entered the Mobile telephony market, when it comes to operating(customer care, network, etc.). Reliance on the other hand is slowly but steadily improving.

I was surprised at this ...being a top mobile operator ...airtel should have had adequate backup facilities (hot or cold site) at some remote place for instances like this
