MTNL Offers Broadband at 2Mpbs from '07
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Dec 21, 2006
State owned telecom, MTNL has announced that it will offer broadband speed of 2 Mbps, to all its existing and new subscribers, in Delhi and Mumbai. The announcement comes along with the inauguration of the new building of MTNL, 'Mahanagar Doorsanchar Bhawan', in Delhi.

In a bid to further popularize internet broadband usage in the country, The Indian Department of Telecom has touted the year 2007, as the 'Year of Broadband' and has already announced a speed upgrade for BSNL subscribers. Both, MTNL and BSNL subscribers will be liable for the broadband speed enhancement upto 2 Mbps from 1st January, 2007 at the existing rates.

The new MTNL building in Delhi, will house futuristic services of the MTNL, such as convergent billing, which will enable MTNL to provide single bill of all services, instead of multiple bills. MTNL aims at enabling its subscribers to access the status of their bills on real-time basis, via the Internet.

Dayanidhi Maran, minister of communications & information technology, revealed that the convergent billing system of MTNL will come into effect from 31st March, next year.

I doub"t whether these blogs are ever read by the concerned authorities. It is sad but true that after all the technical advances due to lack of positive attitudes and proper perspectives, and artifical differentation of subscribers like nu scheme makes one to belive the hidden intention of all this is to cheat if the ocassion permits.ther should not be any artificial differentation or distictions amongst users to avoid such charges.

It makes no sense to increase the speed to 2Mbps when u have limited download facility.I prefer it might be 56kbps speed but downloading should be unlimited. After some time downloading is more important than speed.Because we have seen speed of 56kbps and that also works. So I advice Mtnl to increase the downloading capacity rather than speed. 256kbps speed is quite large for general purpose. It will definately increase Mtnl customers.

I am getting the 2 Mbps speed since last night. I hope that they increase the download limit (its not bandwidth limit as some one called it. They DONOT count the upload in your 'bandwidth limit', so download limit is perfectly correct) too as some one mentioned they might.

Although the speed has increased, its bursty in my case with the internet slowing down a lot in between. I hope it stabilizes in the near future.
Inder @ Jan 08, 2007
I called up mtnl n they told that the speed would be upgaded automatically probably 10th jan. in mumbai, people r already enjoyin 2mbps..
Ashish @ Jan 08, 2007
the MTNL triband have increased the upload speed to 2mbps and not virtually the speed is 2mbps. when the computer connectes to the server the speed will be 2mbps and then it depends on the other server. if it supports the 2mbps speed then u will be getting or u will curse mtnl for offering the low speed but it also depends oin the opposite server to respond. generally the indian servers provide the 2mbps connectivity and international servers dont offer sunh thing.
it offers only 1mbps.
the speed will only be 256 kbps but there will be little difference in the speed. but MTNL rocks and have also heared form the mtnl person that on 26th jan the download the limity will be 1Gb instead of 400 MB and each increased mb will ne charged at .5/mb
isnt that roicking.

MTNL isn't giving 2MBps in Delhi as of now. I called them up and they said it was postponed, but I think they don't want to launch this plan fully. MTNL wil become the best ISP in the world if they made cheap 2MBps Unlimited (or even Night Unlimited Plans). Something like Rs 999 for 2MBps Unlimited would be awesome. But alas, this corrupt government wants to earn more money instead of fulfilling it's so called objective of spreading broadband all over India

I see some dumb comments in here. MTNL IS actually going to provide 2Mbps service from March 2007 for sure, if not January. Also, although the monthly bandwidth limit (download limit, as dumb users usually call it) has not been increased, it is not to be viewed in that perspective. Just think of it this way: what was being offered at 256kbps in the previous era as a standard broadband package, is now going to be upgraded to 2Mbps. The bandwidth limit issue is totally different. Also, if the current speeds are not functioning up to the mark, it could be because of a million reasons. It doesn't mean the company is actually INTENTIOANLLY trying to under-supply their bandwidth to yer homes. How unfortunately dumb, you people!

2 Mbps Speed would be no use, if It's not maintained.I am a MTNL Broadband subscriber of 199 plan with free 400MB download with 256 kbps speed. I found that they are not maintaining 256 speed even.
Sudhakar M @ Dec 29, 2006
too good.. i have the mtnl unlimited plan , wooo i am exited..
Parag @ Dec 29, 2006
HOWEVER THERE IS A CATCH . IT IS NOT APPLICABLE TO UNLIMITED ONES THAT MTNL OFFERS AS PER THE NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENTS
SREESH @ Dec 26, 2006
...at existing rates. may be i am wrong correct me.
raul @ Dec 25, 2006
You people are simply getting carried away with this. Though the speed upgrade is commendable it will be of no use until mtnl and bsnl come up with unlimited schemes and increase the current download limits considerably.
siddharth @ Dec 23, 2006
so what abt other isp ? anyone offered ?
waiting for 1mbps in ahmedabad ...
shahkm @ Dec 23, 2006
Rural India has no idea how awesome this really is gonna be. Compare this with the times when we started our lives with the pathetic dial-up connections!
Haris @ Dec 23, 2006
This news is indeed commendable for BSNL and MTNL. I am a BSNL broadband consumer.
