Youtube is a place generally associated as a place people put everything - from anime to bad music videos and porn. However it seems to be finding more creative use now. In what is probably a first for any video hosting site, a 41 yr old Lockheed Engineer Micheal De Kort has used Youtube for the rather serious act of “WhistleBlowing”.
The topic he wanted to speak out on was a set of security concerns based on critical flaws he had uncovered in a fleet of refurbished Coast Guard boats. Some of the concerns were blind spots in the ship’s security cameras, equipment that malfunctioned in cold weather and other problems.
The Washington Post reported that Micheal De Kort tried all the usual routes. He spoke to government investigators, met up with government representatives and filed all the requisite paper work. When all of his effort yielded no results he decided to take matters in his own hands. He made a video of himself and posted it on Youtube detailing his report which has quickly become one of the most watched videos on the website.
While the maker of this video is to be lauded for taking his fight to a public forum I just hope this is not the start of a new trend. Youtube may just become a forum for the leakage of new products and for corporate espionage
