Darwin's Collections Now Online

Cambridge University has digitized the complete works of one of the world’s most controversial, yet widely studied theorists, Charles Darwin. The project will also make all of Darwin’s works available for free download on MP3 players.

Darwin’s site, darwin-online.org.uk now has 50,000 pages of text and 40,000 images of original publications besides many newly transcribed or never-before-published manuscripts such as a field notebook from his famous Beagle voyage to the Galapagos Islands, where he jotted down observations which later forged his scientific arguments. Other texts appearing online for the first time include the first editions of the Journal Of Researches (1839), The Descent Of Man (1871), The Zoology Of The Voyage Of HMS Beagle (1838-43) and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th editions of the Origin Of Species.

The site also offers more than 150 supplementary texts ranging from reference works to contemporary reviews of Darwin's books, obituaries and recollections and has German, Danish and Russian editions of Darwin’s works. However, the site presently contains only about 50% of the material that will be provided by 2009.
