1 TB drives a few years ago may have seemed like a pipedream. However, in the present time considering 750 GB drives are available over the counter 1 TB will be reality pretty soon. Already many storage companies are working towards making this a reality. Expected to be in the 3.5 inch diameter size , these drives will be the cornerstone of high performance PCs and media centers. The first company to hint that it will have a working product within this year is Hitachi.
Seagate who currently holds the record at 750 GB is also expecting to have a product out by early 2007 at latest. Current 1 TB products retailing in the NAS segment are nothing but two drives working simultaneously i.e. two 500 GB HDDs in tandem.
With all the new drives being based on the perpendicular storage methods, these drives will be really fast and generally more sturdy.
