Popular Korean social networking site will launch in America on August 15, to snatch the attention of the cyber crazy teenage population, right from under MySpace's nose. Armed with Acorns, cartoon alter-egos and bubble-gum colors, Cyworld is nothing short of a phenomenon in Korea, where nine out of 10 citizens between 24 and 29 are members. Founder Henry Chon is marketing the site in the US as a friendly, family oriented site in contrast with MySpce, which has earned a bad reputation, thanks to myriad problems of child predators, lawsuits and spyware on the site. The company is sure that Americans will take to it for its innocent, attractive appeal.
Cyworld offers different animated avatars to each member, who assumes the clothes, hairstyle and hobbies of the member's choosing. Members can visit "Cybuddies" in three-dimensional "Minihomes," complete with art, electronics, furniture and stereo systems. It also has virtual economy centers on a currency called the Dotori, Korean for "acorn”, with which users can purchase furnishings for their Minihomes or buy their avatars special clothes or logos. In addition, gifts such as get-well-soon cards and virtual flowers appear in Minirooms for circulation.
Critics, however are not so sure that an Asian networking site can compete against the hugely popular MySpace with more than 100 million member profiles or even FaceBook, which as more than 7.5 million members in high schools and colleges.
