Some of you may actually have Windows Vista beta or RC, but those builds don't have the final system sounds that will be in the retail box. 'I Started Something' has posted a comparison of some of Windows Vista and Windows XP system sounds for all to enjoy.
Windows Vista’s system sounds have been composed by guitarist Robert Fripp, and are encoded in at 1,411 kbps, four times higher quality than Windows XP's sounds which are encoded at 352 kbps. They are very soft and subtle, unlike the relatively harsh sounding XP sounds. I think they are a little too minimal, but Jim Allchin says that they intended to make the sounds just noticeable enough so they wouldn't howl at you when you're least expecting them.
