One oft-discussed problem with the Xbox360 has been its huge failure rate. The RROD (or Red Ring of Death, as it’s popularly known) has affected nearly 30 percent of the shipped product line. Naturally this has resulted in plenty of irritated customers, who have vented in no uncertain terms. It's also led to rumors about the cause of the failure, ranging from overheating and bad design to shoddy construction.
Now it seems a lot of these rumors have been confirmed. In a rather revealing interview, a source who has worked extensively on the core team of the Xbox360 has attributed the failure not only to just a basic design flaw but many other reasons. These include understaffing of crucial departments that were overseeing the design of the box, and rushing the product out into the market despite repeated indicators from the design team that the product had some very serious flaws.
There was also a lack of Q/C on the manufacturing side – the products designed were immature and in some cases just not up to the mark and were yet shipped. The report also goes on to confirm that the main reason of failures was the excessive overheating caused to the GPU.
While the interview is long and quite technical, the picture it paints of Microsoft is not very flattering. The report clearly indicts a flawed product that was rushed to the market despite internal warnings. Then when the reports began to flow in of its failure, the product was kept shipping and was not recalled for a correction in design.
