Ever wondered what smashing a guy’s face in with a 2x4 feels like? If you have, I suggest you try out Monolith’s first person melee fest. Called Condemned: Criminal Origins and released way back in 2005, it was the closest you could get to experiencing such a heinous (not to mention satisfying) act without landing in jail.
Unlike conventional first person shooters on the block, Condemned ignored traditional weapons (aka guns) in favor of blunt objects like lead pipes, shovels, crowbars etc to provide a highly intense, visceral, up close, and personal experience.
Now, nearly three years later, we have the sequel to this brutal game, and it's called Condemned 2: Bloodshot. Don't worry; the game is set to terrorize players once again when it releases on March 14 for the Xbox360 and the PS3.
I say 'terrorize' because Criminal Origins was more of a survival horror (inspired by flicks like Se7en and the Bone Collector) than an all-out kill-everything-that-moves kinda game. Criminal Origins placed players in the boots of an FBI forensic investigator called Ethan Thomas who was unfortunate enough to get entangled in the most horrifying case of his entire life.
Bloodshot sees Thomas returning once again to the FBI but this time he’s merely a shell of his former self since killing over 200 people has really f*ked him up... badly. In fact, Ethan suffers from hallucinations and has a tough time keeping track of reality, as a result of which his mind ends up playing tons of tricks on him.
Like any self-respecting male who's hit rock bottom, he finds solace in alcohol – as a result of which he gets chucked out from the force. Unfortunately, the brown stuff’s again hit the fan, and since the other available agents are too chicken to take on the case, the FBI recruits him once again. At the same time he finds out that his former partner is missing as well, so yeah, I would say that’s motivation enough for Mr Thomas to drop the bottle and pick up the nearest blunt object.
