Condemned 2: Bloodshot
By: Avinash Bali   |   Jan 24, 2008

Even though the first game paid a lot of importance to combat, it had certain puzzle elements that were tied into the game’s forensic mechanic. What this means is that players had to examine a bunch of dead bodies using state-of-the-art equipment to determine the cause of death. While this was a cool concept, it got pretty monotonous after a while. Monolith are hoping to change that by incorporating a brand-new system that promises to be a lot more interactive.

For example, as and when you come across a dead body in Bloodshot, you’ll be asked a bunch of questions about the victim’s age, sex etc. Depending on how accurate your answers are, you’ll come one step closer to identifying your victim and the cause of death. Even though you won’t be forced to conduct these investigations, the game will reward you for doing so by endowing you with Forensic Points that can be used to purchase upgrades.

One you’re done playing detective it’s time to concentrate on the meatier aspect of the game... combat! As expected, Bloodshot will offer players even more blunt objects than the first game, and the best part is that these objects can now be used as projectiles as well. Unfortunately, the game’s AI learns pretty fast as well, so make sure you duck real fast when you see a lead pipe cruising toward your face.

In the previous game players could finish off enemies in just four ways (that were deliciously brutal, by the way) but in Bloodshot, you’ll have a lot more – the details of which are still under wraps. If that wasn’t enough you’ll even be able to use the environment to finish off your foes as a result of which Ethan can now smash faces through TVs, giving a whole new meaning to the term shock therapy.

While visuals, forensic mechanics, and combat look tight, perhaps the most interesting aspect of Bloodshot will be its multiplayer mode, something that was seriously lacking in the first game. In addition to your run-of-the-mill Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, the game will also offer two unique modes called Crime Scene and Bum Rush (heh).

In Crime Scene, one group of players will be tasked with fulfilling certain forensic activities (such as finding and protecting evidence) while the other group will have to ensure they don’t. Bum Rush on the other hand is more like Team Deathmatch, where one group of players will have to fight an onslaught of bums (played by other players) for a period of three minutes.

As you can see, Condemned 2 Bloodshot is shaping out to be quite an interesting (not to mention hyper-violent) title and if all goes well, the game should make its way to the PC in the near future as well. My only concern is that the game shouldn’t go overboard with its violence or we may end up with another Manhunt 2 on our hands. Then again, bludgeoning bums to death isn’t really frowned upon by censors, or Criminal Origins wouldn’t have made it to the shelves in the first place.
