Even though I prefer my games violent, visceral, bloody, and—oh! did I mention violent—there are times when I crave a slight change of pace, which I satiate by firing up a nice stealth game. Maybe it’s the whole thrill of moving around unnoticed or the fact that I can stalk my prey from the shadows and kill him before he knows what hit him, but either way, I’m a big fan of this genre and have spent countless nights playing most of the crowd favorites like Splinter Cell, Manhunt, Thief III and so on. Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of stealth based games out and so Austin-based studio, Edge of Reality have come to our rescue with Cipher Complex, a brand new stealth/action game that plans on re-inventing this genre.
The reason they felt they had to re-invent this genre is because they felt most stealth game protagonists move slower than your grandma and this, can make for some boring gameplay, (once again, their opinion, not mine) so what they’ve done for Cipher Complex is given its protagonist the ability to literally go through an entire room of people even before the first body even hits the floor. Interesting!
Before we dwell further into gameplay mechanics, let’s take a look at the game’s plot, which by the way is penned by Mark Bristol (Chronicles of Narnia, Equilibrium, Momento). In Cipher Complex, you’ll step into the boots of John Sullivan—an orphan who started serving his country at a very young age by joining the military. Being the badass that he is, he moved up in life pretty fast and after working with the US military and the NSA, he found himself working with an unknown organization whose sole aim is to restrict the illegal buying and selling of nuclear weapons. The first level (which I’m guessing will serve as a tutorial of sorts) has Sullivan chasing a warhead somewhere in Northern Iraq when he’s betrayed by an arms dealer, who places a bullet in his brain. Sullivan slips into a coma only to be awakened years later by an experiment that has somehow tweaked his adrenal system. Sullivan out, Cipher in...
