Dead Space
By: Avinash Bali   |   Mar 10,2008

I’ll be honest: I was never very stoked about Dead Space since the whole "no one can hear you scream in space" bit was kinda done to death in recent times. However, after a three-level preview of the game, courtesy one of the game’s producers, Rich Briggs, I think EA may have something really cool on their hands.

Touted as EA’s entry into the Survival Horror genre, Dead Space puts players in the boots of an engineer called Isaac Clarke, whose company repairs giant spaceships for a living. In true Event Horizon style, Clarke’s company receives a distress call from USG Ishimura, a ship that salvages minerals and stuff from dead planets.

As Clarke embarks on what he figures to be a routine job, little does he know that a hostile race of aliens have overrun the entire ship and are using the crew's bodies to host one messed-up welcoming party. And you thought your job sucked...

NOTE: As clichéd as the story may sound, I was told the game does have certain WTF! moments thrown in to spice things up a bit and that "all's not what it seems".

In case you haven’t been following up on the game, Dead Space will play out like your standard third person survival horror fare, similar to Resident Evil or Cold Fear. As and when you zoom in with your weapon, the game shifts to a behind-the-shoulder view (just like in Resident Evil 4 or Cold Fear) for a clearer shot of your enemies.

As far as creatures are concerned, Briggs refused to comment on the different types of aliens we can expect in the final version, but he did state there would be plenty of them in different stages of corruption.
