Vice City Stories
By: Avinash Bali   |   Oct 06, 2006

Since the next iteration of GTA is pretty far off, there’s not much you could do except maybe fire up Just Cause or Saint’s Row (if you own the Xbox 360 i.e.), but let’s say you’re looking for an authentic GTA experience, what then? All I can say is that you’re in luck as Rockstar is about to release Vice City Stories (VCS) this October for the PSP, and just like Liberty City Stories (LCS), if this game does well, expect it on the PS2 as well.

Now I know what you’re thinking, "I've played this game on the PC/PS2, why should I spend money on a port?", and that’s where I come in to clear all those misconceptions up. Unlike what the game’s name may signify, VCS is in fact a brand new game with a new storyline, new missions, new characters, new weapons, newer gameplay elements like jet skis and something that’s new for handheld GTA games like swimming and air borne vehicles. If that wasn’t enough, you even get a brand new protagonist. Yeah, that’s right, no more trash talking smart guy, Tommy Vercetti (I admit, I was heart broken when I heard that, but life’s all about moving on right?), in VCS, you’ll step into the shoes of Victor "Vic" Vance, a 28 year old soldier who’s trying to make ends meet in the 80’s in Vice City. Poor Vic’s predicament started when he was kicked off the US army and he now finds himself jobless, penniless on the mean streets of Vice City where he has only one choice to make, 'make an empire or be crushed'. Coincidentally, Vic’s the brother of your accomplice from Vice City, Lance Vance Dance, so expect that little bitch in this handheld version as well.

Like all GTA games, VCS will be divided between story based missions, side missions and plain old free-roaming mayhem. To progress along the story you’ll have undertake missions from some really weird (but funny) characters and like all GTA games you can do so in any order you please (as long as you’ve already unlocked those missions). Side missions on the other hand will grant you extra dough, better weapons and maybe a safe house or so where you could regenerate health, escape from cops (since you clock six hours in your safe house) and save your game. New to the series is something called 'Empire Building', a brand new kind of side mission where you guessed it, you’re to build your very own empire by hook or by crook (well actually, only by crook, this is Vice City after all). According to Rockstar, there will be six distinct businesses you’ll be able to indulge in; Protection, Prostitution, Drugs, Loan Sharking and Robbery and each will have their very own side missions, for example, you’ll have to taxi girls around from one place to another as and when you dealing with Prostitution rackets.
