For testing the performance of the Q, we carried it out in two stages. Our first test were the standard benchmarks utilizing SiSoft Sandra, HDTach and PCMark 2005. This is a fairly comprehensive testing suite and will expose the performance of a machine thoroughly. In this respect the Q turned out is a very average performer. It had a Pockmark score of 3480 which is really low for a fairly powerful system like this. This PC would have really benefitted from shifting to the C2D platform. We didn’t bother running PCmark 2006 on this system as it sports a very average Nvidia 6200 series card which won’t run any modern day game and is best used only for multimedia purposes. Also another gripe we have is the inexplicable absence of a DVI input on the graphic card. DVI as compared to D-Sub offers sharper images and richer colors.
Our second test involved testing the media –center functionality of the PC. Here we were pleasantly surprised. The DMP platform works really well. Using the Jog dial we were easily able to access a comprehensive variety of options ranging from TV watching to accessing music, movies and stored images. The only thing that annoyed us here was the performance of the DMP application in its non-windows mode. It was extremely slow and almost unusable. Under windows the same DMP application is nearly instantaneous and responds a lot quicker. The DMP application also supports "time-shifting" where you can pause a live TV channel. This is done by recording the live feed as a mpg file on the HDD and playing it back when you switch back to a live-feed. The transitioning from delayed live to recorded live was almost instanteous and a pleasure to use.
Overall the Lenovo Q is a mixed bag. If you are looking for a PC that doubles up as a gaming center too you are plain out of luck and are better off looking elsewhere. This is purely a media-center PC. Barring this setback, Lenovo has really nailed it with its DMP application. The application works as advertised and is a great alternative to Windows XP Media Center 2005. Priced at Rs. 63,999 this machine is rather expensive and will barely run Windows Vista and just for that, we would not recommend this product.
