I love the pace at which India is getting HD savvy, but at the same time I hate the price we have to pay for technology that's a lot cheaper everywhere else. Really, what's with that?

Now that Xbox 360 has already made its mark in the Indian market and even the PS3 is expected to make its entry soon, gamers are looking for cheaper and more resourceful means of getting the best out of their systems than by forsaking their education funds to get a flat-panel HDTV. We at Tech2 completely identify with these gamers, and look for innovative ways to have a cheap HD setup at home as well. The Philips 29" CRT HDTV may just be the most pocket-friendly option out there.

Being a CRT TV the back is obviously a little extended. The reason I say "a little" is because the extension's not as huge as you normally see on 29" CRTs. I guess it's probably the new slim series of picture tubes. Still it does take up a good amount of space at the back, so don't throw out your TV trolly just yet.

Overall the TV does look a lot better than the cheaper and lesser functional 29-inchers you get in the market these days. It's black body with the curved edges makes it look elite and suitable for any living room.

Though the TV has support for resolutions up to 1080p (more on that in a bit), the output it gives is still pretty much analog, because of which it doesn't have any digital inputs like HDMI or DVI. In fact it only supports component, composite and RF inputs, which can get a bit limiting. Still, considering it has two sets of component inputs and another two sets on composite inputs, it shouldn't be much of a problem keeping a game console, DVD player and your cable set-top box connected at the same time.

You could try it. It should work

Is it possible to hook up an HDMI to component cable (the one that comes with XBox) and use it to connect a standard HDMI DVD player to this TV? Anyone tried it?
John @ May 15, 2008
This tele is simply fantastic. Pictures are smooth, sharp and very stable; the true signs of 100 hz tv. Color bleed is no problem once you bring down the value to around 26%. I have kept Noise Reduction & Contrast+ Off. Works well with all the frills turned off too.

However; i still want to own the original controversy packed Matchline TV with Pixel Plus. Controversy as many video critics found faults with the Pixel Plus picture processing but to the common man the picture looked stunning. This was one stunner of a TV; all Philips Matchlines are. Pixel Plus was an option you could actually Turn ON & OFF. This does not exist with the 8836

You need to connect the DVD player to the YpPbPr connectors for HD input. These inputs are the ones that are at a higher level on the back panel. Keep composite video of AV1 connected as well. Switch to AV1 and turn ON Progressive Scan on the DVD player. Accept all the warning screens the DVD player shows but keep an eye for the 15 sec time for auto recovery Philips DVD player normally display. Accept the prompt. Now switch to video input YpPbPr on the TV. Picture is displayed over analog HD input. Its kinda strange but this input displays no signal when Progressive Scan is turned off

I don't seem to have any trouble with the news tickers at the bottom of the screen. Thats the first thing i checked over my Sky connection. Its perfect.

What did worry me initially is that the CVI input on the TV does not work with Progressive Scan. The picture just goes off to the screen saver of the tv (Blue Screen) the moment you switch on Progressive Scan on the DVD player. You have to wait for the Auto Recover feature on the DVD player to revert back to interlaced mode. I got in touch with Philips phone support and they were helpful but the idea of getting Progressive Scan to work is tricky. First of all; PS input is not supported on the CVI input of the TV.

It looks like i got the best bargain. Croma (A TATA venture) Electronic Retail store in Pune (The best in Pune) had one last piece and were dumping it for Rs. 19000. It was a display piece but i went ahead and bought it. Fantastic TV.

Can't really call it HD ready as there is no HDMI input but it supports 1080i resolution over YpPbPr video input. Not on the CVI or Component Video Input. According to a Philips online customer support representative Philips DVD player DVP5965K/96 can output 1080i over CVI so that does sound HD Ready; if not true to exact technical term.

Sound is alright for a TV but i have heard much better sounding sets from the Philips stable of televisions itself

I bought oneafter reading the write up on this tv here. It is a good piece, limitation is you cannot make use of the 720p resolution unless you have a DVD player the can upscale via component. Can anyone sugest where those DVD players mentioned by JohnJ can be purchased in India. If JohnJ has been successful in obtaining these players, could he please share with us.

The expert reviewer and peer commnters somehow missed out the best feature of this fantastic television - it has a 100hz scan rate.
Consider this, most value PC monitors, both CRT and LCD, have a scan rate of 75hz max.
I bought one from QRS, Trivandrum for 22,000 last month. My son, who is less than 2 years old, has this nasty habit of "watching" TV right in front of it, less that 8 inches of viewing distance! This is an ideal set for his eyes.

On the negative side, no HDMI, no PIP, crappy-looking remote and a curvy cabinet - you cant place anything on top of it.

vivek @ Nov 13, 2007
I never imagined this would happen even in my dreams. A HD CRT tv.... Now all I have to do is convince my dad to buy this.

We would like to have price and availability of this product
Rakesh Kapil @ May 28, 2007
At this stage do not buy the tube TVs and waste space and money. Go for HD-ready tellys coz they offer better SD performance than the full HD panels. Remember India is yet to step into the HD era while many countries are already 3-5 years ahead. The 10th Gen Panny and the latest Sammys would be good choice. The entire world (donno India) is waiting for the release of the 8th gen PIO that is touted to have a 20,000:1 contrast ratio and more cleaner and deeper blacks. Though Pio ain't going to enter India aggressively in the near future it would be worth trying for it through available channels.

i was almost about to buy yhis TV but whilt checking various color settings,in the dynamic or rich setting,i could see color burnout,as in, i could see a red line around the edges of peoples faces. That really disturbed me and i've dropped the idea of buying this TV for now.I wanted to know if anyone has observed such color burnout, plz reply to this comment. Also i inquired at all leading stores like vijay sales,SonyMony etc,but for some reason thay said they donot keep Philips TV's,that again raises a doubt as to why these leading showroom do not keep Philips.Though finally i found the TV at Sumaria, but the color burnout thing turn me off.

Even I am using one for a month...and I really really find strange that anything on this TV

can strain your eyes, I did not find any problem at all. THat news ticker thing you are

talking about gives a flickring impression only if you view the TV less than 3 feet-4 feet

(which obviously is not sutable) If you view the tv from a respectable 7-10 feet you find no

such thing. It has a 100Hz referesh rate makes viewing a pleasure. Audio through RF is more
sam9s @ May 06, 2007
looks great for rs 22000 and best part is its high definition
sachin @ May 05, 2007
Of course you can use a DVD player that uses components to upscale to 1080 like the Oppo OPDV971H, Helios HD4000 - I am looking for one in neighboring Nepal.

Big selling points

1. Price point.
2. 100 Hz.
3. Progressive scan.
4. HD - not really, but yes if you get those DVD players that upscales via component - you have a winner on your hands.
JohnJ @ May 03, 2007
@Biju - Yes, the text curves as it runs - is a drawback if you are going to use the ticker function most of the time. It is not a drawback of this TV, but most large CRTs.

@Raman - Prices would depend on your location. Here in Siliguri (W.Bengal) it is 22,700/- ( Initially quote at the MRP @ 24,990). You can bargain and I guess you can get it for as less as 22,000.

I think this TV should not be marketed as a "HD" TV really. First of all it does not have HDMI, so you can't really get 1080i/p (not sure if it supports 1080p - the website specs say it does

Supported Display Resolution
Video formats : 480p, 60Hz, 720p, 50, 60Hz, 1080i, 60Hz, 1080p, 60Hz
JohnJ @ May 03, 2007
please let me know the exact price of this TV including all the taxes.i would consider it then.thank you.
raman @ May 02, 2007
Hi, I own one for more than a month. It's pretty good. 2 probs-one mentioned-the text is not crystal clear especially the news ticker that runs at the bottom of the screen(it is actually a strain on the eye)& the text curves as it runs( it appears to go in and come out!). The second is that sound output from AV connections is low. The TV volume has to be set very high to get reasonable sound. From TATA Sky box, I alternatively connected the AV & RF & found that the RF gives better output(volume controls kept same). Philips personnel had a look but didn't find both issues a problem. I emailed them and their response seems to suggest most people using TVs are morons. Can you please checks these & tell me if the model generally has the problem or i have to get my set checked? Thanks, biju.
