Samsung’s Guru handsets have one thing in common – simplicity. Then again they are entry-level handsets to begin with, so we can’t really expect them to overflow with features. What Samsung has tried to create are simple phones with basic features, and they’ve also thrown in an exceptionally long-lasting battery to sweeten the deal. The Guru 200 was designed to deliver just these features. Let's see if they managed to get it right.
Form Factor
The Guru 200 is a lightweight candybar phone with a 1.5 inch TFT display (128 x 128 pixel resolution), five-way nav-pad, and a well-proportioned keypad designed for comfortable typing. It has a proprietary charger/handsfree port on the side. On the whole this is a sleek handset with a black-and-white color combo. There’s really nothing else to its design.
Features and Performance
Being an entry level handset, the Guru 200 has just enough features to make it an asset to users who don’t need much from their phones. It has the basic features you’ll find in most handsets today: an alarm clock, calendar, calculator, currency converter, to-do list, and an option for storing voice memos. Another useful feature is Samsung's Mobile Tracker application that the phone comes preloaded with.
One feature that makes the Guru 200 stand out is the Mobile Prayer application. This application allows the user to select from a list of gods (Shiva, Durga, Hanuman etc.), and the phone will display an image of the selected god and play the appropriate prayer in the background through the speakerphone (or the handsfree, if connected). The application has a timer mode, so it can be automatically activated at a time of your choice.
The Guru 200 comes with a couple of games that would at least help pass the time when required: Sudoku and Cricket. The handset may have an option for inserting GPRS settings but it doesn't support GPRS as you'll notice there is no browser. The reason is that the handset was initially launched in other parts of the world with GPRS support. And personally I'm not sure, and Samsung confirmed this, whether an entry level phone that would cost so little would have support for the same. In case already have the handset and were wondering - No, the Guru 200 DOES NOT support GPRS.
