Performance
Moser Baer was sweet enough to send us a case with 3 DVDs along with the player. It had some cool Hindi titles like Mr Natwarlal, Apne, Ghayal, and more. Before reviewing we just sat back and watched some of the films; it was too tempting.
Back to the serious stuff: we inserted our DVE test disc and ran the patterns and montages to see what the hype is about. The response time of the drive and buttons was quite prompt, and the picture did not have any major faults. At the same time, there was nothing about the picture that was spectacular or particularly commendable.
The colors banded in small amounts, though only in certain scenes. Y/C delay (colors bleeding out of borders) also was encountered, though rarely. Otherwise the picture was smooth; there were no lines and jerks that are so common with entry-level players. This player is priced really cheap, so I can cut it a little slack. The color bandwidth was pretty impressive.
In motion scenes, ghosting, jaggies and deinterlacing artifacts were present. It's tolerable if your eye is not overly discerning. Again, 576p is outdated these days, and I didn’t care about my TVs resolution now, we had to focus on the DVD player.
Audio decoding was okay; we connected the 5.1 output to a Harman Kardon receiver and played a Star Wars DVD. There is nothing much to talk about the audio, except that the dynamic range sometimes sounded compressed, and not so open, but for the price it was great. I recommend using a digital audio out thought, and just let the receiver do the decoding.
Conclusion
At Rs 2990, this is one of the cheapest DVD players available. It looks so good that the lack of HDMI is sidelined. At the price, HDMI upscaling is not possible anyway. So if you just want a cool looking, basic DVD player, this is ideal, so long as you don’t expect much by way of quality. Verdict: a good player for the 'janta', but not for techies or enthusiasts.
