The biggest USP of the HP Deskjet 3940 is that its just so damn cute! A cute, compact printer like this one will look good on any desk. Though it was not meant for portability, its small form factor and the ability to fold securely into itself makes it a pretty good option for carrying around on short distances. When it comes to looks, the HP 3940 is the best looking printer in its category.

The Deskjet 3940 was pretty good with some of our complex geometrical vector tests. The lines were pretty clear and well separated similar to what we've seen in the printer's higher end brethren. Even the font tests showed pretty good results, with all our fonts showing great levels of detail in all sizes.

It was during our color and photo printing tests that the printer showed its real shortcomings. The Deskjet 3940 showed its weakness in color separation tests. There was visible banding in our color gradients and even the pure yellow color had traces of magenta in it. Even the blacks looked more like ultra-dark-blue.

When it came to photo tests, the results looked a bit overexposed. The image lacked a sense of depth and appeared flat when the subject was clearly not so. Luckily, most users would not even notice the lack of depth since such things come to perspective only when they're compared to similar prints from other printers.

If speed is a big criterion for you then you should look at other options, as this one tends to take its sweet time. This wouldn't be much of a bother if it's normal document printing you're looking at, but if you plan to print your family vacation photo album then you better expect to spend around eleven to twelve minutes per A4-sized page at maximum dpi.

We managed to get 142 pages of prints before the color ink started showing signs of depletion, which is a tad less when you're spending Rs 1,512 on printing cartridges (Rs. 702 for black ink and Rs. 810 for color).

With that said, the HP Deskjet 3940 is nowhere close to being a bad printer. For it's price of Rs 2,999 it's a pretty good deal that would look great on your desktop and even handle your regular printing needs without hiccups. If you're looking at speed or overall better quality, then maybe you should take a look at the Canon PIXMA 1200.
