When we first got it to walk, someone screamed “Wow…Wee”. Then we got it to burp and soon everyone was guffawing to the farting noises followed by a mechanized voice saying, “I hope no one saw that!!”
WowWee also happens to be the company that manufactures Robosapien V2. V2? Because, it’s the second version of the first prototype that appeared in the market years back. It created a rave. This one is bigger, better and a little clumsier!
According to the company, Robosapien V2 is, “a highly evolved robotic fusion of technology and personality, combining fluid biomechanical motion with a multi-sensory, interactive humanoid personality.” We don’t want any of that. We’ll tell you in simple terms whether you get your money’s worth out of this piece of machine.
Build and Moves
The Robosapien’s body is better articulated than its predecessors, with 6 turning moves and 5 different walking gaits. This means you can make it bend, pick up objects, throw his arms wide open, turn it in place and also make him get up on his own if he ever falls on his back. He can’t, sadly enough, get up if he falls on his face. For this, the RS2 uses 12 standard M130 motors for all actions, with a single M21 motor for the eye action.
You may find the Robot tripping on carpet, but you can change the gait using the change gait change function (given in the user manual).
Apart from making his moves, he is also capable of recognizing three different colors vis-à-vis red, blue and green. The RS2 works on CMOS XVGA color visual tracking and recognition, IR radar reflection, sharp audio detection and location microphones, as well as touch and tilt sensors throughout his body. This enables the RS2 to react to sounds and when in “free roaming” mode the sensors prevent him from bumping into obstacles.
