It’s hard work keeping up with the rate at which Chinese products hit the market. As a rule we don’t consider them, but occasionally you find yourself staring at a great piece of work. Now, the KNC M-700 player is as 'brandless' as any Chinese product can be. Which means I like what it can do, but I cannot vouch for its longevity.
In appearance, the player looks like a badly resized Nokia 5310. What with, the blue banding and the music buttons, there’s no doubt where they got the inspiration from. It features a 3-inch QVGA TFT screen with a resolution of 400 x 240. I also learnt from various sources that it runs on a 400MHz processor.
The bottom of the screen is graced by only three buttons – rewind, forward, and (right in the middle) the menu key. The keys double as volume control, which is one of the most idiotic aspects of the player.
As it turns out, you need to hold and release the V button (on the top) just so the volume icon starts blinking on the screen. This indicates that the forward and rewind button can now to be used as volume keys. Brilliant – not!
The player likes to keep it simple. The menu is skimpy, with options lined up atop each other. Navigating is a mix of doing this and that, quite literally! To stop blundering and get from point A to point B will require familiarity with the 'multi-tasking' nature of each button.
