Network storage once used only in enterprise setups, has now found increased acceptance with enthusiast level desktop users and in households with more than one PC. This is because with the ever-growing popularity of digital media and larger storage devices on the desktop level, it is almost impossible to back it up onto digital media like DVD-R. Though solutions like HD DVD and Blu-Ray writers exist, they are very expensive and out of the reach of virtually everyone. In such a case, NAS devices with their higher capacity storage and 'PC independent' status have emerged as the perfect solution.
Realizing the potential of these devices, most of the major manufacturers now offer NAS devices that are aimed squarely at the end-user segment and offer comprehensive backup solutions. One such company is Buffalo that has been operating in this segment for sometime now and has developed a good reputation based on the quality of its products. They have recently unveiled a new line of products called the "Linkstation Line" that apart from being centralized storage devices, also conform to the DLNA Media Server standard. The device we are reviewing today is their entry-level product the "Link Station Line 250 GB". How does it stack up to the competition and what tangible advantages does it offer? Let us find out.
