Taking cue from its predecessors, Battlefield 2142 gives us the same large scale battles that we’ve always loved. Only this time, they’ve fast-forwarded time to a futuristic sci-fi setting, unlike the historical theme the previous games used. The two sides locked in battle here are the European Union or EU, and the Pan Asian Coalition or PAC (basically another name for Russia). These two factions are formed from countries that have banded together to find fertile and livable grounds, in a world blanketed by a new ice-age. With the small number of inhabitable places and two many people to hole-up in them, these factions are fighting to survive.
Although the storyline breaks away from the Battlefield series’ tradition of historical themes, the gameplay offered is akin to that of the previous games. The battlegrounds are still massive, and the action is still as fast paced and strategic as ever. The game continues to offer the Conquest Mode native to all Battlefield games, where you have to capture strategic nodes in order to win. One thing that’s different here though, is the game’s look. Although the game uses a modified version of the Battlefield 2 engine, the futuristic setting of the game changes its look tremendously. So for all of you who were growing weary of the series’ look, this change in scenario is a good thing. The game has a grungy metal-over-ice look, which goes well with the gameplay. This look can even be seen in the user-interface, which I must say, is very well designed. Thankfully, the game hasn’t adopted the shiny 'pew-pew' laser weapons or colorful explosions you see in most Sci-fi flicks (*cough* Star Wars *cough*). Instead, the technology displayed in the game has a more metallic and clunky feel to it, and the guns look like buffed up versions of existing real-life weaponry. This is a good thing, since I’m really tired of the hair-drier look of guns in other sci-fi games.
