It’s really hard to review free roaming games without comparing them to the GTA series so I’ll try and keep that to a minimum (I’ll try!) over here. As you may have read in our preview, Just Cause is a mixture of Far Cry (tropical setting) and GTA (free roaming nature) with some totally over the top moves thrown in to mix things up. While this sounds like an attractive package at first, in reality, you’re treated to something that will make you go "ooh…aah" for the first hour or so, but then you’ll probably end up re-installing your copy of San Andreas (I know I did).
Just Cause has an immense amount of promise but unfortunately it’s constantly marred with erratic, annoying AI and a single player game that gets boring really fast. Kill someone in a limited time period… check. Deliver the goods from point A to point B… Been there done that. And the worst part is that these missions have been done before by GTA or Mafia and they’ve done a much better job of it, so the question at hand is, why should you play this game? I mean, the voice acting is crappy, cut-scenes look like they’ve been designed by 12 year old retards and the story is as flimsy as your girlfriend’s prom dress but if you get your kicks with shallow thrills by watching a grown up man throw himself off everything he physically can, it does provide you with a couple of hours of entertainment. It’s a guilty pleasure like one of those B grade movies; you know it’s cheesy, but you may as well watch it since you’ve got nothing better to do.
