Infernal

Looks gorgeous
Shooting mechanics are tight
Sturdy controls
Archaic level design
Monotonous gameplay
Braindead AI

Considering the fact that the lead character is a fallen angel who possesses awesome powers like telekinesis, teleporting and so on, the game could have been made like a Psi-Ops (that would have been so sweet) but someone over at Metropolis felt the need to stick to the "open the door, shoot enemies, find key, open another door repeat x 1,000,0000" formula as a result of which most of the game falls into painfully repetitive category; add to that a highly clichéd story packed with beyond clichéd characters and extremely lame voice acting and you’ll begin to understand what Infernal’s all about.

The game puts players into the boots of Ryan Lennox, a trusted lieutenant to an organization called the Etherlight, which can only be described as Heaven’s version of the CIA. Unfortunately, Ryan’s methods are a bit too brutal for them angelic folk so he ends up getting banished from the agency and to make matters worse, he’s now being hunted by his former employers as well. Fed up with all this betrayal he joins forces with the dark side to give the Etherlight a taste of their own medicine.

I can forgive a crappy story and I totally enjoy the occasional well done mindless shooter but Infernal falls pretty short in the gameplay department as well. The game even tries to incorporate a cover system akin to Gears or Vegas but it’s so crappy, you’ll rarely find yourself using it. On the brighter side, the game does have a pretty sturdy control scheme and the shooting mechanics are in place but pretty soon you’ll get put off by the monotony of the locations as well as the brain dead AI.

Like I’ve said umpteen times by now the game had tons of promise but it just falls short of even becoming a brainless shooter; let alone some thing a lot more memorable like a Max Payne or a Psi-Ops. In today’s day and age when developers are constantly striving to offer gamers an innovative experience, Infernal sadly feels like a step back in time.
