Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (PC)

Double Agent concept is pretty cool
Moral Choices are a nice touch
Mission Variety
Level Design
Addition of 'interactive cut-scenes'
Too buggy
Framerate Issues
Extremely steep requirements
Did I mention buggy?

Being a newcomer to the whole stealth genre, my very first foray into this shadowy word was with Splinter Cell. At first I was pretty bored with the whole moving in the shadows bit, but once I really got into the thick of things, I fell for it hook, line and sinker. Pandora Tomorrow, the second game in this franchise was a pretty 'meh' experience, but Ubisoft really managed to redeem themselves with Chaos Theory, the third Splinter Cell game that practically re-invented the entire series. Now after Chaos Theory, Ubisoft decided to go the next gen way with Double Agent, which is fine by me, but unfortunately, this outing isn’t a very pleasant one, especially for the PC community.

Not only is this game highly demanding (and unreasonable) on the system, but it’s plagued by a truckload of technical issues that can totally put you off the game. For example, in one of the game’s missions (Shanghai level if I’m not wrong), I had to make my way to a particular room to procure certain documents and every time I approached it, I kept falling through the freaking floor and out of the hotel. Frustrating? You betcha! Want more? How about this; I screw up in one mission and get detected by an enemy who swiftly removes his gun to silence me; only thing is none of his bullets affect me and my health bar remains unaffected after being shot at with an automatic weapon for five minutes. Metropolis called, they want Superman back.

The reason I call the system requirements unreasonable is because you WILL NOT (feel the emphasis here) be able to run the game unless and until your graphic card supports Shader Model 3.0. This has got to be the stupidest move I’ve seen in a long time because Ubisoft has alienated nearly 50% (or more) of the PC gaming community with such high requirements. If that wasn’t bad enough, most of the game crawls at a painful 20 – 25 FPS constantly (even on our GeForce 7900 GTX); in fact during certain levels, it even dips down to a vomit inducing 7 - 8 FPS. I’m sorry, but this is totally unacceptable; I mean I shell out thousands on that sparkling new graphic card, and I can’t even get 30 FPS? Lame, lame LAME…

First off, I thought there was a 30 fps framecap limit to this game. Don't tell me there wasn't, because I've played the 360 version, and it was still was laggy as hell.

This product was rushed, people. Both for the PC and the 360. It's not your computer (8800 has plenty of issues with it because the card wasn't supported). This was just a poorly developed game. Graphically, there's not a big difference between this and Chaos Theory. Yet, Chaos Theory runs like a champ on low end comps, and the original XBOX. Double Agent is just a product of this new age of gaming. Where you can place a name on a product, and devs will have to sacrifice testing performance for a company's lust for $$$. However, this is not the case for Double Agent. These were just lazy devs. Don't pay for laziness.

soundcards are overated @ Mar 17, 2008
@Billy

Wrong, this game is indeed a port from the console version, and a very poor one to say the least. No laptop support either guys, I tried to run this on my Alienware Area 51 m9750 with dual 7950GTX cards, and it still ran in slowmotion. I you have a gaming laptop, forget it. As the reviewer said, even with a normal PC, stick to the console version. Very buggy, and Ubisoft have done nothing to fix it.

i have amd 4800+,2gigs of ram and 8600gt card and still the frames are very low
this frustrates a lot because the game appeared to be good but unplayable even in my monster pc

Just to let you guys know, even if you manage to get a card that supports Shader Model 3.0. You still need 1 GB of Ram or more. So make sure that you always read the System specs on the box before you shell out your hard earned cash. I ran the game with an AMD Sempron 1800 MHz, ASUS Geforce 6600 256 MB and , 2GB of Ram at about 50 FPS, 1024x768 Res. Let me tell you that a lot of ram is needed to run todays games. If you're experiencing gliches in the game like falling through floors or textures not running right, it is not because the game is a bad port NO,NO,NO, This game is not a port it was made for the P.C. So here is how you guys solve the gliches in the game, upgrade your system memmory!, and I sure any card with SM 3.0 you buy will run the game at least 40 to 50 FPS. Any questions?
Billy @ Aug 26, 2007
You all are lucky bastards even to have a card that supports the f***ing game! I was so pissed off when I couldn't play it after shelling off almost $50. I have an ATI Diamond Viper X700, but It doesn't support Shader Model 3.0. I downloaded Demos for BioShock, Medal of Honor Airborne, but they all run off the Unreal therefore none of them even f****g work because of my Shader Model deficiency. I swear if I get one more error with this I am going to f****g kill someone.I'm only 16, I don't have a job yet, nor a car, if I did I wouldn't be here bitching about this. But some of you have to understand that, I'm not the lucky one with parents that will let me buy anything I want.
Karl @ Aug 25, 2007
Will ubisoft address the framerate problem in this game with an update. I have 2x 7800gt and it still drops to 10 fps. I mean comeon!!!
Jabbo @ Jan 14, 2007
@ Eddie:
Sorry mate, no way around that, cards with Shader Model only. If you're really hell bent on playing the game I recommend the PS2 version/
Avinash Bali @ Jan 06, 2007
i have a gforce 5500 shader model 2.0. IS there a patch i can get for this because the game will load, but then crashes because of shader model. PLEASE HELP!
Eddie @ Jan 06, 2007
This game is a bad port in PC, UBISOFT didnt optimise it for PC much. I mean, come on, shader 3.0 only?? WTF? Yanno, that happens alot in these days, bad optimisation. Call of Juarez, Neverwinter Nights 2, Gothic 3....and the list goes on, why dont the concentrate on PC only, lucky CRYSIS gonna be pc exclusive. And no to console kiddies, they can forget about this game until they can buy a decent PC.
BLiTZ_v3 @ Dec 19, 2006
well, that thing gives the Feeling that we have to hide so that others wont see us :P after entering a room I always go First person see two sides and then Stick to the wall and tag along that way, then peeking to see(at the corner) who's there, its great! 'cause in the complete 3rd person View one can also see far off guys which is not humanly possible, so it(MGS view) kinda adds to the suspense :P

I played whole of the third game crawling like a snake :P the game really makes ur Pulse rate increase,lol.

MGS 4 will surely be a must play. But U will have little idea of whats going on unless u play the others,
if you ever are interested, start with mgs3 as it kinda explains the beginning of the whole thing(and its just SUPERB!) U will have a basic Idea of things in MGS 4 that way.
Reetesh @ Dec 17, 2006
it is a nice game
rolly polly @ Dec 17, 2006
@Reetesh:

Ya know dude, I did try playing MGS but I got put off by the whole top down view, and I know I should have played Subsistance, but I guess I got lazy. Let's see what MGS 4 brings to the table.
Avinash Bali @ Dec 17, 2006
@PC:
Ok here goes:

1. The 360 version does perform a bit better in terms of frame rates but I think (and am pretty sure) it suffers from the same bugs since the PC version is essentially a 360 port.

2. MP in the Splinter Cell series has been getting better as time passes, so I'm sure Double Agent won't disappoint as well; only thing is I’ve heard it's a bitch to connect to a sever for the PC version, the 360 version is a lot better in that respect as well.

3. Well to be honest, we got the card by the time I had finished playing the game, but we're testing Vegas on it and are pretty happy with the performance so far.
Avinash Bali @ Dec 17, 2006
seems 2 b a sweet game. but i've a few questions
1.how does it's xbox 360 counterpart perform in all respects. if u can b specific it'll b cool
2.how is the MP campaign
3. and most imp Q - why didn't u guy's use ur 8800GTX :)
PC @ Dec 16, 2006
The game sounds cool! All those things we can do are Great! ubisoft has been porting all those console games to PC lately, and It did a VERY bad job with that too. I cant think of the quality of their products reducing like that.

BTW you never played MGS :o U are missing a huge part of gaming! play and U will surely enjoy it.
