Mitashi has been in the PMP business for a while, so it's not a new technology for the company. One would expect such a company (which already has similar products) to make its newer models better than the earlier ones. Does Mitashi's latest offering – the KNM 2GB – live up to this expectation? After putting the device through its paces, here’s what I can tell you...
Form Factor
The KNM-2GB is a sleek video player. It has a 2.4 inch QVGA display with a 320 x 240 pixel resolution. Right beside the screen is a navigation panel with touch-sensitive keys. On one side of this light (60g) player is the USB (mini) port and a 3.5mm socket for the earphones. On the other side is a microSD card port.
Now here’s where it gets a bit odd and I’ll explain it a little later, but... on the top is a power key to switch the player on, as well as to pause audio and video files. The bottom of the player has what I naturally presumed to be a Hold switch, though there was no mention of the same. The switch simply shows On and Off, and I came to realize this is simply a way to switch the hardware off. There's an inbuilt speaker that may not be too loud, but it’s okay.
Features and Performance
I loved the audio quality of the player. It was loud and clear. I’m not a fan of in-ear earphones, so I used my own to test the player. Once again we have a device that doesn’t make life easy for users – there's no a sub-menu that allows you to change EQ settings on the music play screen itself. You’ll have to go all the way back to the main menu and then into ‘Settings’, ‘Music’ and then you have the choice of either selecting from a bunch of presets or using the manual EQ to set the sound to your preference. The EQ definitely helps, but the journey to and from the music screen to the settings will take you about 8 key presses which is way too long.
