The 206NW, as the name indicates, is a 20-inch LCD panel. It has a native resolution of 1680x1050, pixels, 2ms response time, and a DCR (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) of 3000:1 (real contrast ratio 800:1). While these specifications look absolutely mindblowing on paper, the reality is rather different.
The first and foremost drawback of the 206BW is the lack of a DVI port. This entails some issues such as lack of bandwidth to transfer uncompressed video and a lack of sharpness as compared to DVI. Secondly it uses DCR, which works on the principle of constantly adjusting the picture with regard to darkness and brightness. How does this affect the 206NW? Read on to find out.
We used Displaymate’s excellent setup routine to help the monitor achieve its optimum settings. After this we used the same software, along with games and HD movies, for the tests. As far as color and contrast were concerned the monitor delivered above average performance. The contrast and brightness levels, however, seemed surprisingly 'high' and these settings had to be toned down a bit to prevent the images from looking too jarring.
Next we checked the effect the DCR had in relation to movies and games. In both these fronts the performance was average. In Crysis utilizing a dual-SLI setup, there was considerable graphic lag on screen, which was visibly absent when DVI is used in other products. Also the DCR in some scenes while using HD samples would overemphasize the brightness and in darker scenes would dull the screen so much that one had to strain one's eyes.
The 2ms response time, however, smoothed out a lot of problems. While there was lag as we mentioned before, it was simply due to the lack of the D-Sub connector’s inability to handle high uncompressed video/graphical output. Whenever there was a low-res scene, the 2ms timing assured there was no ghosting.
Conclusion
The 206NW could have been a great product. Its 2ms response timing and DCR would have been killer features if the interface had not been analog. The D-Sub connector is well past its prime now and showing its age. The cost of the product is quite acceptable, however, at Rs 12,700. Keeping all these factors in mind, we'd suggest you carefully study the market before you decide. There are some very good options available in this price bracket that do offer DVI, which will offer much better picture quality and be easier on the eyes.
