Gorgeous Visuals
DJ Controls are an extremely innovative mechanic

For me, Def Jam Fight for New York (FFNY) was to fighting games, what Burnout Takedown was to arcade racers… a monumental experience. Not only did the game manage to score a nice little place in my "best games of all times" list but it was by far one of the most brutal, visceral and over the top fighters to come out of EA's then kiddie-friendly stable. The game scored highly (in my books) in nearly every aspect be it gameplay (shoving an opponent’s face into a jukebox or throwing him in front of a speeding train is a liberating experience no doubt), video, audio or control and all this awesomeness was amplified by the over the top Blazing moves that had you finishing your opponents off in a multitude of interesting ways.


Around seven months ago when we first heard of a Def Jam game being made for next gen consoles, I nearly crapped my pants with excitement but soon all my joy turned to doubt when I heard that the reigns of development had passed on from Aki Corp to EA’s very own Chicago studios. Sure these guys were behind the innovative Fight Night series but then again Fight Night isn’t a fighting game (technically speaking) and Def Jam was one franchise best left with Aki since they had managed to perfect the formula over the years. So has EA screwed up big time or has it successfully managed to take the franchise in a new direction? Read on to find out…
