As if sub-par videogames based on popular movies weren’t bad enough, you now have developers making sub-par videogames based on television shows. As expected, the results aren’t all that pleasant (read all about Nik’s horrific experience with Lost: Via Domus here).
One would think developers would have learned to stay clear of movie-to-game adaptations by now, but apparently milking the cash cow reigns supreme and following that shameful path we now have developer High Moon Studios (Darkwatch) with their latest action game based on the Bourne movies, called the Bourne Conspiracy. While this game isn’t as bad as, say, Superman Returns, it’s still a far cry from being the next Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Let the button mashing begin...
As we’ve already mentioned in our preview, the game sheds some light on Bourne’s mysterious past and weaves in and out of the events from the first movie. The game starts off with Jason Bourne floating half-dead in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea after a botched assassination. From there on it’s a journey through a bunch of familiar locales like Paris, Switzerland etc as Bourne struggles to regain his memory and punish those who dared betray him.
The game is essentially broken up into two distinct aspects: hand-to-hand and weapon combat. Bourne can unleash light as well as heavy attacks on his opponents and by beating the crap out of them he fills up his adrenaline bar that can be used to pwn them in the form of brutal takedowns. There’s no denying the fact that smashing someone’s face in a kitchen sink or breaking their hand before you smash their face into a nearby pillar looks beyond badass but at the end of the day everything boils down to context-sensitive actions...
...and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the game’s biggest shortcoming. Excessive dependence on such context-sensitive actions (made popular by games like God of War and Resident Evil) makes you feel more like you’re watching one long-ass interactive cutscene than actually playing a game.
