Zooming 101
By: Gagan Gupta   |   Apr 21, 2007
Megapixel count is perhaps the most over-hyped spec in a digital camera. While higher resolutions are excellent for large-sized image prints, a 5 megapixel resolution is more than enough to get a full A4-sized page print out. And really, when was the last time you took a bigger photo print than that?

Zoom, on the other hand, which is usually considered secondary in most marketing material, is the single most highly used feature in any digital camera. In fact, it's the zoom that allows you to create the perfect composition. A big part about improving your photography skills is your control over your camera's zoom.

This shot, taken without zoom has a lot of clutter around the subject

With a little zoom, I've managed to create a cleaner, and less cluttered composition

Satan Uses Digital Zoom
The first thing you need to understand is the difference between digital and optical zoom. Optical zoom is usually achieved by adjusting the camera's optics, which work's a lot more naturally by retaining the image quality at any zoom level.

In the super zoom prosumer category, you have missed out the two most popular models, Canon S3 IS and Sony Cypershot H5- both offering 12x zoom, excellent features, easy handling, excellent optics.
