A Gaming Machine For Rs 60,000
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Mar 10, 2008

Despite all the gloom and doom concerning the impending death of PC gaming, it continues to grow and break new ground in user interactivity and sheer gaming experience. Taking this into consideration, we decided to refresh our gaming machine section and went looking to see what changes have occurred since the last time we were here.

As compared to previous roundups, we were surprised to find that the entire landscape had changed in just a few months. Not only had processing power of GPUs/CPUs risen exponentially, storage and memory costs had crashed dramatically. Here are the changes...

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200

Ever since it tasted success with its Core 2 Duo range, Intel has been on a roll. The processor we have chosen here is the Intel C2D E8200 and it’s a part of the recently launched Penryn series. It is built on a 45nm dye process, features a clock speed of 2.66 GHz, runs on a 1333 MHz FSB, and has 6MB L2 cache. With such healthy specifications – and the fact that it’s already earned a reputation for being a prodigious overclocker – this is an ideal choice.

Motherboard: Abit IP35-E

We used this board in our Rs 35,000 PC, and it can be easily used here too. Abit as a firm needs no introduction. Having been a premier OC board maker for a decade now, its products are very reliable and can withstand a lot of stress. The IP35-E is based on the Intel P35 series of chipsets and offers native support for the 1333 MHz FSB. The board lacks onboard graphics, but does offer a single PCIe 16x slot, 2 PCIe x1 slot, 8 USB slots, 3 PCI slots, and 4 SATA 2 (3GB) slots.

RAM: Kingston DDR2 800 RAM 2GB

DDR2 RAM prices have hit an all-time low. A single stick of DDR2 RAM is now available for just Rs 1,550. And Kingston, with its product lifetime warranty and great quality, is the perfect choice.

I think AMD X4 Phenom series for gaming is far superior bet than the Intel ones. Added with 790G chipset, it would be a killer combo.

i had always like the reviews given my tech2 as they give their information on hard core research done by them and again buying Xbox 360 and PS3 may cost lower but they require the support stuffs like HD TV and Sound System, so i think these guys do their job perfectly.
Nitesh Lohia @ May 04, 2008
I don't understand why people keep comparing a PC to gaming consoles. XBOX 360 or PS3 may cost half of this 60 grand comp, but that's all you get- a box to play games with. You need to buy Hi-Def television to play games on and a capable sound system to compliment it. When you add the cost of all the above, it will hit the 60K mark. In such a case, I think PC gets my vote as it would be able to do much more than just gaming.

heh... go buy an xbox 360 20k only,it will atleast not be outdated.. like these things

@ Puneet

Ashwin @ Mar 19, 2008
@ VIJAY

8800gt Vs. 22" LCD resolution = weak fps
i think the guys here have a nice balance.
Puneet @ Mar 17, 2008
A gaming machine deserves at least a 22inch LCD- ideal is Dell Ultrasharp2208WFP 22 for 14.5k- I think for 60k an ideal config should be

my budget is 50k.... so i will be making it a 19" wide TFT (8k) , cheap kebd and mouse combo (from MS or Logitech 500/-) , LG DVD Writer (1300/-) , cheap cabinet (2000/-), much better speakers (logitech X530 6000/-) and probably an inferior processor... could someone please suggest a good cpu to go with the 8800GT 512 ??
zach @ Mar 14, 2008
The mobo looks outdated to me as it cannot take advantage of nvidia's SLI technology .......
shashidhar @ Mar 12, 2008
60,000 for gaming? thats stupid. why would i buy a pc for gaming at 60k when i can buy an xbox 360 at half the price and get the best graphics experience? this is nonsense.

PC's gets upgraded everyother time and the demand for higher configuration is more with every game being released. so its better to stick to gaming consoles. cheers!!!

@saurav

While i agree, that most gamers will prefer to use headphones, it was my choice to go with a simple 5.1 to cater to a larger audience for movie/music purposes.
jayesh @ Mar 12, 2008
80% gamers use headphones and a 500gb hdd is not much needed. So save the money there & buy a good graphics card like 8800 ultra, ram should be 4 gb. Overall the above specifications are not good.
Saurav ghosh @ Mar 12, 2008
How abt a gaming PC for 100000 bucks...................
Himanshu Sharma @ Mar 12, 2008
lol u guyz weren't able to fit the e8400 for a 60k budget.

Ashwin @ Mar 12, 2008
Good components.I personally like the choice of mouse, MX518 is a good gaming mouse and is not too costly. However can someone tell me the price of Zebronics PEACE cabinet please. my email address is 'slayaditya@gmail.com'
Aditya Sharma @ Mar 11, 2008
i can get a PS3 in 25000 which can play even better games than a gaming PC of 60000 bucks
jimmy @ Mar 11, 2008
i would prefer AMD X2 6000 with asus m3a h\hdmi motherboard with Ati 3870x2 with 4GB RAM
james @ Mar 11, 2008
you know...maybe you guys should do an article for a decent workstation...just like this one.....that would be really cool!!
