Racism On XBox Live!

Luckily for me I haven’t been Live for too long so I haven’t encountered so many tools, but certain members of the 360indians.com haven’t been all that lucky and some of them have borne the brunt of this sort of discrimination:
Sameer AKA HundredProofSam loves playing PES6 and he plays online from time to time but what he didn’t expect was that his low ping (which happens if you connect to international servers) would earn him names like 'desi lagger' and comments like "Can’t you Indians afford a decent net connection?"
Another 360i member, Bush Pirate regales us with his experience with the mentally challenged:
"The worst stuff I heard was from a British guy last week in Gears (ranked) who continuously harassed a Bangladeshi guy (based in the UK) in game. He started off with religious slurs as the guy was obviously Moslem. Then he started calling him a 3rd world Ni**er and it got really offensive to the point where many of us left the game."
Diablo IV on the other hand has his strategies sorted out and here’s what he and his homies do to combat racism:
"They try to diss me or my friends because of my 'Asian' accent . But me and my friend(s) who I usually play with back me up, so in the end its the guy who gets dissed and kicked out. Lol it’s actually fun sometimes; they think they’re too cool and once you beat them fair and square they say that 'I' had host advantage."
There are lots more but one thing I’ve noticed is that the most amount of racism takes place while playing overtly Americanized games like Halo 2, Gears of War or Rainbow Six Vegas where they target people with low ping and automatically assume that he’s from some third world country. Pretty soon the poor guy is humiliated, abused for no fault of his and kicked out from the server as well.
Some people feel we’re making a big deal out of this and that people who find such racial slurs offensive should make their way to a different zone like Recreation or Family since the Underground Zone is described as a place where "anything goes—and usually does." A little competitive banter, strong yet healthy competition and a certain amount of trash talk never hurt anyone but why cross the line by making fun of people’s heritage or the way they speak; that’s like hitting below the belt and in fact there are some people out there who aren’t really interested in playing; it seems that they log onto Live just to make other players’ lives miserable.
The worst part in all this is that there’s nothing much you can do to punish such offenders. That’s right; these guys are probably thousands of miles away so there’s no way you can smack some sense into them; what you can do is submit a negative review against such players that’ll make them an un-preferred player and in a worse case scenario they’ll get banned for a day after which they’re back. Why isn't Microsoft taking stricter measures against these offenders? Why is online racism treated so lightly? Maybe there aren’t too many people voicing their opinion but we’re hoping that you do take the necessary action against such offenders because if enough people complain against such perpetrators, they will get permanently banned eventually.

Good article and i suggest u try and put this on xbox.com(if its possible)
i get it taunted quiet a lot
europeans are nice people
some of them think i'm british and the some who check my GT don't really mind if i'm indian
some americans are cool too
but majority of them just start layin the insults once they check my GT or can't pick up my accent
and they go like "Dude why r u in India, dont u like have elephants runnin in ur streets","An indian playing gears of war?","i didnt think 360's existed in india","Woh an Indian leading the score sheets, this is embarassing"
Some americans though are nice to talk to and they hate people like the ones who said that stuff above
BTW i luv whippin racist c0cky americans anyday
especially in burnout and gears of war

great article!!
since one of my quotes made it into ur article, it must be stressed that these are isolated incidents and the people that make such comments are a small minority...on the whole, most players are quite friendly (of course u will be kicked if u bring lag to their games, but that has nothing to do with racism)....sam

well, its tough to think what actually can be done to stop all this....the only thing tht can be done is to educate and civilize the people of these countries....the problem is tht they are very advanced technologically and economically, but at the end of the days, as human beings, they are still uncivilized....and im not sure tht anything can be done to fix it...
even if MS started banning these ppl, how long does it take to make a new GT....!! so i doubt tht anything much can be done...!! but still, i appreciate yr effort in bringing forward what is happening....

Video games are a type of sport and if steps are taken, racist behavior can be banned, even though it takes place in Xbox Live Underground. So, this has to be reported to Microsoft.
Tech2 does interview the higher level authorities at Microsoft, how come it has never posed this question to them? There are many organizations abroad who are working against racism. Even they can be alerted and I am sure they would do something about that.

Those people should visit Bangalore and see how a house keeping person talks in SIX human languages including English. for so many generation Americans speak English - the simple language. so do it in style accent. But India, you can find different dialect of same language for every 200KM-300KM. So don't worry on ethnic /racism problem. some take birth to promote racism as their purpose of their birth. ignore them

Avinash Bali's hatred towards the racist behaviour that he has been the bearing the brunt of, has turned him into a racist. He doesnt seem to know it yet though.
Its very sad that a good site like tech2.com will publish, nay, endorse viewpoints of such foul mouthed racists.
Very sad indeed.

the most racist places/countries against indian people. In Hongkong
they "literally" spit on Indians, as any indian living there in private
(in public he/she won't say so). This Hutch-Essar investment in India
violates all laws ,rules, regulations of India including those of DoT,FIPB etc, delibratelypre-planned and preschemed. Its investment in India should be abrogated and in License to OPERATE
CANCELLED; and company merged with MTNL. MTNL should reimburse the investment made to Li Ka-Shing and others at cost.
You all women jointly protest to GoI to this effect. I once happened
to run into a Gujarathi prof that was with his 12 year(about) old son
and told him I'm from Hongkong. He said "that's the place hate ind

Do I find a Racism in this article !

The day a middle class person is able to afford unlimited internet, India would rule the online world. There are much potent gamers here who just can't afford to show their talent and power "online"

Catch you online.

First of all this isn't a forum but you get top marks for observation either way. And secondly my aim with this article wasn't to garner pity, but to warn people that racism does exist online and it isn't very pleasent. If you did read the article, you'd also come accross the part where I did "ruffle back", but once again that wasn't the point.
Avinash Bali @ Apr 11, 2007
It seems there is no room for tollerence anymore. I might sound like a geek or a nerd or a guy who hasnt seen the world or something, but COMMON, isint there a limit?

My one advice to you: "Dude, wake up and grow up"
Teh_Architect @ Apr 11, 2007
Every one's entitled to their opinion but the impression I get from your comment is that you're trying really hard to appear clever by psycho-analyzing this article. I am not trying to be accepted; I am merely highlighting the predicament that tons of people face online. Maybe you should wake up and smell the grass yourself; if you can afford a decent net connection i.e....
Avinash Bali @ Apr 11, 2007
Also - regarding another comment made here, complaining to authorities is a childish, whiner-like response, IMHO. At best you'll spend unneccesary time and energy on some morons not important enough to deserve it.
Either grow a thick skin, learn to dish out as good as you get or stop playing. sTrikEzErO's perception of India is obviously flawed, but he does give one good peice of advice - "Stop taking rants from kids living thousands of miles away and play with the kids next doo

Leave your Xboxes. Stop taking rants from kids living thousands of miles away and play with the kids next door. Live in the real world.
