Burnout 2: Point of Impact (2002)
With Burnout 2, this series received its much loved Crash Mode as well as the Pursuit mode (which was axed after this game). The Pursuit mode had you chasing a speeding motorist in a cop car or vice versa while in the Crash Mode you had to drive your car head on into a crowded junction to cause the maximum amount of carnage (don’t you just love the concept?). The game was initially launched for the PlayStation 2 in 2002 but was soon re-released for the Xbox with over 21 new vehicle skins and online functionality.
Burnout 3: Takedown (2004)
While the first two games garnered a lot of European fan following, it was only after Burnout 3 did American audiences stand up and take notice of this game. Criterion literally rebuilt this game from the ground up with insane speeds never seen before in a racing game as well as the ability to take your opponents down at such break neck speeds. Even though the game looked good and boasted a lot of on screen mayhem, it ran at a stable frame-rate on the PlayStation 2 which is another commendable feat on their behalf. Every single crash, every single takedown in this game was brought to life, courtesy of killer particle effects combined with a slow motion Takedown camera (which could be turned off in the options menu since it got a little annoying once the novelty wore off) for a visually exhilarating experience; takedown had elevated this series to a whole new level.
