5 Must Play Cel-Shaded Games
By: Avinash Bali   |   May 08, 2007
There isn’t any sort of fixed meaning for the term 'cel shaded games' but simply put, it’s the art of making games that looks pretty cartoony. The first 3D game to use this technology was a game called Jet Set Radio that was developed by Japanese developer Smilebit for Sega’s Dreamcast in the year 2000 (that small history lesson was brought to you courtesy of wikipedia).

Now even though cel shading makes a game look all cool and trippy, not all cel shaded games are fun to play (remember Marvel: Ultimate Alliance?) and since we at Tech2.com are a considerate bunch we’ve compiled a small list of five of the best cel shaded games out there for you.

Okami

Okami was Clover Studios’ final masterpiece before Capcom’s subsidiary shutdown so suddenly shut their doors. They even had God Hand to their credit (sue me, I liked the game) but that game wasn’t well received by most gamers (and the press) and even then God Hand lacked the aesthetic beauty of the cel shaded visual extravaganza that is Okami. The game put players into the paws of a wolf God called Amaterasu who like all good Gods strives to banish the land of all evil. What made this game so unique (besides it’s highly tripped out visuals) was the fact that at any given point in time players could call upon the services of a Celestial brush that could be used during combat and to solve certain puzzles as well as get through certain areas.

Don’t Worry Praveen; a lot of ex Clover employees have moved on to start Seeds, a brand new development studios so you may get sequels (spiritual or otherwise) to your beloved Clover games in the near future.

Nicely done Avinash .. and just to add to the whole thing, in case you guys wish to experience the real magic of cel shading on a handheld, Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble for the PSP is definitely worth trying out. I really liked Fear Effect for PSOne with all the great lighting included, a true legend in my opinion. For adventure fans, Runaway is also a must play title ... if you really have the time to sit and solve those damn hard puzzles i.e.
